Thomas Edison Depot Classics: Bride of the Monster (1955)

This month’s film is Bride of the Monster – a 1955 American independent science fiction horror film, co-written, produced and directed by Edward D. Wood Jr., and starring Bela Lugosi and Tor Johnson with a supporting cast featuring Tony McCoy and Loretta King.
Dr. Eric Vornoff, aided by his assistant, kidnaps twelve men for a gruesome experiment that harnesses atomic energy to forge a new breed of super‑humans. Reporter Janet Lawton, engaged to the local lieutenant, learns of Vornoff’s allegedly haunted mansion and vows to investigate, uncovering the mad scientist’s terrifying scheme!
As a special Halloween treat {and nod to Thomas Edison}, we will also be screening Frankenstein – a 1910 American short silent horror film produced by Edison Manufacturing Company. It was directed by J. Searle Dawley, who also wrote the one-reeler’s screenplay, broadly basing his “scenario” on Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel “Frankenstein: or; The Modern Prometheus.” This short motion picture is generally recognized by film historians as the first screen adaptation of Shelley’s work. The small cast, who are not credited in the surviving 1910 print of the film, includes Augustus Phillips as Dr. Frankenstein, Charles Ogle as Frankenstein’s monster, and Mary Fuller as the doctor’s fiancée.
