Did you know...

Beatrice Thornton was an art teacher in the Port Huron Area School District for many years. She struggled for 15 years to make the Port Huron Museum’s student art exhibition a reality.

She was dedicated to her students. During the Depression, when money for art instruction dried up, she convinced the American Red Cross to donate paint and local ship yards to donate wood scraps for the students to use for various art projects. During World War II, she sweet-talked a local shopkeeper into letting her display her students’ work in his store window.

Beatrice Thornton fought to display her students’ art work. She and several other supporters longed for a place to display art - a place such as a museum.

It is in her honor that the Beatrice Thornton Student Art Exhibition was started at the Port Huron Museum in 1968. Beatrice Thornton died September 9, 1987, at the age of 92.

The 2008 Beatrice Thornton Student Art Exhibition runs February 28 through March 28. Teachers can begin hanging their students' art beginning February 25 and ending February 27. The show will return to a split concurrent exhibit this year. K-5 will return to the Port Huron Museum while 6-12 remain at SC4. This will give teachers more room to work with.

There will be an opening reception February 28 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm at SC4 for middle and high school artists.

There will be an opening reception February 28 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm at the Main Museum for the elementary schools artists.

Refreshments will be served at both receptions.

All work must be taken down and removed Monday, March 31 and/or Tuesday, April 1. Due to limited storage available, the Port Huron Museum and SC4 are unable to store any artwork after April 1.

Thank you in advance for being a part of this wonderful exhibit.
